KCI launches new wound-care product in Canada, Europe

Kinetic Concepts Inc. (KCI) has rolled out a new wound-management system in the European and Canadian markets.

San Antonio-based KCI (NYSE: KCI) has developed the Prevena Incision Management System, a medical device that relies on negative pressure to heal wounds following surgically closed incisions. Pre-market studies have shown that Prevena may reduce the risk of post-operative complications, such as infections.

The product is now available for use in hospitals throughout Europe and Canada. KCI officials estimate that more than three million procedures are performed each year that could potentially benefit from Prevena. This represents a global market opportunity of more than $1 billion.

Prevena is designed to promote wound healing by removing potentially infectious material from the body, helping hold the edges of the incision together, reducing edema and protecting the surgical site from external infectious sources.

The product also includes a single dressing that is worn for the duration of treatment, which acts as a barrier to external infections.
