The University of Texas Medical Branch Institute for Human Infections and Immunity, Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, Center for Hepatitis Research, and the James W. McLaughlin Fellowship Fund, in collaboration with the British Consulate-General of Houston’s Science and Innovation Group and the UK Health Protection Agency is proud to announce a symposium centered around the theme of Controlling Emerging Infectious Diseases in the 21st Century on February 26-28, 2010 at Galveston Island Convention Center.

The symposium will include the following sessions:

  • Respiratory infections: influenza
  • Respiratory infections: tuberculosis and other respiratory infections
  • Mosquito- and tick-borne infectious diseases
  • Hepatitis C
  • Microbial drug resistance
  • Enteric bacterial and viral infections
  • Epidemiology of infectious diseases
  • BSL-4/ACDP-4 pathogens
  • Poster sessions in each of the above areas

This collaborative meeting will bring together U.S. and British experts to discuss the latest developments in basic and applied infectious disease research.

Abstracts and Poster Presentations:
Attendees
(faculty members, scientists, postdoctoral, resident and graduate trainees) are invited to submit their research related to one or more of the areas of the conference for consideration as a poster presentation.

Abstracts should be submitted by email as Microsoft Word documents to
Deborah James and should include the title, names of authors, addresses, and submitting author’s email address. The text of the abstract should not exceed 400 words.  **The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, January 29, 2010**. Awards will be given for the best graduate student and postdoctoral/resident trainee poster presentation.

 
Travel Awards for Trainees to Attend this Symposium:

The conference will support five Travel Awards from predoctoral and/or postdoctoral trainees in UK laboratories to present posters at the symposium. These awards will cover:

  • Registration fees,
  • Flight from London Heathrow to Houston IAH
  • Transportation expenses to/from IAH airport to Galveston
  • Three nights of lodging and meals at the Hilton-Galveston Island Resort.

 

Please submit the following to Deborah James (djames@utmb.edu) by Monday, January 11, 2010 for consideration for a Travel Award:

  • A cover letter stating your name, institution, position, phone number, fax number and email address, title of your abstract, plus the name and position of your supervisor
  • A copy of your curriculum vitae
  • A letter from your supervisor supporting your application for a travel award
  • A copy of your abstract (according to the instructions)

Results will be notified by Tuesday January 19, 2010.
